Site Licensed Software for Departments

The University has license agreements with a number of vendors which are aimed at departments, rather than researchers or students. These arrangements are usually of greatest benefit to IT departments on campus who need to centrally manage clusters of servers or desktop machines, but may also be of use to research groups large enough to have their own IT shops. Licenses include:

McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator

In the interests of maintaining virus-free computers around campus, NSIT maintains a central license for McAfee Antivirus. This is available as a free download to all current students, staff, and faculty of the University.

Additionally, the license also includes McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator. This allows IT departments who centrally manage their desktops or servers to monitor VirusScan installations in their domain, and ensure that their virus definitions are up to date and all settings are correct. Departments interested in ePO should contact the Site Licensing Office for more information.

Microsoft Campus Agreement/Select

The University subsidizes a central license for the most commonly-used Microsoft desktop applications, including Office, Windows Upgrade, and Visual Studio. Departments can obtain copies of these products through the NSIT Solution Center for a media fee. For more information, see the Microsoft Campus Agreement page.

Please note: For the purposes of virtual machines, Mac OS X currently counts as an "upgradable operating system" under the terms of the Campus Agreement. A machine which is purchased with no operating system, or with Linux preinstalled, does NOT qualify for a Windows upgrade.

The Campus Agreement also covers the Core CAL, which provides Client Access Licenses for Windows Server, Exchange Server, Systems Management Server and SharePoint Portal Server. Additionally, the Campus Computer Stores maintains a Microsoft Select Agreement; departments can purchase licenses for Windows Server, SQL Server, and other Microsoft products under Select. For more information, see the Microsoft Campus Agreement page, or contact the NSIT Solution Center for pricing.

Shavlik NetCheck Protect

In order to help Windows users on campus better manage Microsoft's frequent (and often urgent) software updates, NSIT has subsidized a site license for Shavlik's NetCheck Protect patch management product. NSIT will be underwriting the per-seat client costs for University-owned machines on campus. Departmental support organizations wishing to run their own HFNetChkPro consoles may join, but must pay the cost of adding a console.

NSIT will be subsidizing this license through November of 2009. If it is desirable to renew maintenance at that time, it may be necessary to ask departments to contribute a larger share of the costs -- we'll send out notices regarding this as that date draws nearer.

For more information, contact the Site Licensing Office.

Tripwire Enterprise

In order to provide increased security for servers and desktops on campus, NSIT is currently sponsoring a license for Tripwire Enterprise, including the Tripwire Manager, for both Windows and Unix. NSIT will be subsidizing this license through March of 2010. If it is desirable to renew maintenance at that time, it may be necessary to ask departments to contribute a share of the costs -- we'll send out notices regarding this as that date draws nearer.

For more information, contact the Site Licensing Office.

Oracle Database

The University is currently maintaining a central license for Oracle Database and the Oracle Advanced Security on every OS they're available on (including Windows, Solaris, Linux, and others). For information on joining this license, contact Jim Hobein at jhobein@uchicago.edu. Note that our arrangement does not include any kind of support beyond access to Oracle's internal forums.
