Site Licensed Software for Faculty and Staff

Various groups in the University have arranged volume licenses for products used on faculty and staff desktop machines, either for productivity, security, or research and teaching. This page lists those licenses which are maintained by the NSIT Site Licensing Office, as well as a few packages which are maintained by other groups on campus but which we're asked about regularly. Licensed packages include:

Research groups who are managing a large IT infrastructure may also want to check the departmental license listing.

McAfee Antivirus

In order to help control security threats to the University network, NSIT subsidizes a license for McAfee antivirus software. It can be downloaded at no charge from http://antivirus.uchicago.edu/.

Adobe Acrobat (and other Adobe products)

Adobe does not currently have a practical method for centralizing site licenses for its products. However, the NSIT Solution Center maintain a license agreement with Adobe which allows them to aggregate all their Adobe purchases to determine pricing. This generally doesn't work out to be very good for individual purchases, but it's be a big win if you can share one copy of installation media among several machines. Contact the Solution Center for more information.

Microsoft Products

The University subsidizes a central license for the most commonly-used Microsoft desktop applications, including Office, Windows Upgrade, and Visual Studio. Departments can obtain copies of these products through the NSIT Solution Center for a media fee. For more information, see the Microsoft Campus Agreement page.

Please note: For the purposes of virtual machines, Mac OS X currently counts as an "upgradable operating system" under the terms of the Campus Agreement. A machine which is purchased with no operating system, or with Linux preinstalled, does NOT qualify for a Windows upgrade.

Hummingbird HostExplorer tn3270

Administrative applications hosted on the mainframe require tn3270 to access them. Accordingly, NSIT is maintaining a license for a Windows tn3270 client, Hummingbird HostExplorer. It can be downloaded from the Site Licensing website at no charge.

WinZip

The NSIT Site Licensing Office periodically purchases licenses for WinZip, which are then resold to departments. These licenses are not maintained; everything is handled as a one-time purchase. (This also means that the version we have on hand may not be the most current.) Remember to include the name and email address of a contact person with your payment details -- download information will be sent to that address.

X-Win32

NSIT is currently maintaining a license for Starnet's X-Win32 X server. The terms of our license restrict its use to machines with IP addresses in the uchicago.edu domain. Remember to include the name and email address of a contact person with your payment details -- download information will be sent to that address.

SPSS

The Site Licensing Office is maintaining a volume license for SPSS for Windows, including the Base, Advanced, and Regression Models packages. SPSS Tables can be added at a cost of $150 per machine; SPSS AMOS can be added at a cost of $175 per machine (FY2007-08 pricing). Remember to include the name and email address of a contact person with your payment details -- license keys will be sent to that address.

Stata

The Site Licensing Office is maintaining a volume license for Stata on several operating systems, including 64-bit versions of those OS's. We maintain licenses for both Stata/SE (for single-user boxes) and Stata/MP (for multi-processor boxes). Note that Stata/MP is licensed by thread, so a dual-core machine could in principle use Stata/MPx2 (two threads), and a machine with two dual-core processors could in principle use up to four threads (Stata/MPx4). An 8-thread license is available from Stata, as well; if you're interested in licensing that, contact the Site Licensing Office.

Please note: Because there are so many operating system options available, it is very important to specify what OS you're using when you place your order.

Electronic Design Software

The Electronic Development Group of the Enrico Fermi Institute maintains licenses for a number of EDS packages, including Mentor Graphics, Cadence, Synopsys, and others. Contact Mary Heintz at mary@frodo.uchicago.edu for details on obtaining access to these packages.

IDL

The Site Licensing Office maintains a volume licence for IDL. The pricing for calendar year 2008 breaks down as follows:

License typeBuy-in cost
Campus Network License$75 per concurrent user
Standalone License$150 per concurrent user
25-user blocs (mix-and-match)$1,000

The above prices are both for new licenses and annual maintenance. The Campus Network License is for machines that are on campus and attached to the campus network. Standalone Licenses are intended for laptops which may not always be on campus. The 25-user blocs can mix between campus network and standalone licenses, or run their own license managers.

Note that standalone licenses do require an active Ethernet card, though they don't neeed to be attached to a network -- the card just needs to be active. Please provide the hostname and MAC address of your machine along with your order. (The MAC address is also known as the physical address under Windows, or the Ethernet address under Mac OS X. It is NOT the same as an IP address.)

Mathematica

NSIT is currently subsidizing a central site license for the Mathematica modelling package. It can be downloaded at no charge from http://mathematica.uchicago.edu/.

MATLAB

We currently maintain a floating network license for Matlab on UNIX/Windows (which also includes support for Linux, UNIX, & MacOS X) which requires that your machine be connected to the campus network and have an valid uchicago.edu IP address registered in DNS. You would not be able to use Matlab on your notebook when away from campus or not connected to the network. If you wish to utilize Matlab while away from campus, you should instead purchase a node-locked license for Matlab directly from Mathworks for your laptop.

Here is the current information about the Matlab for UNIX/Windows license with pricing that includes:

The license is restricted to authorized hosts on the University network. Accordingly, you must include the hostnames of the machines you want authorized when making your payment.

NVivo

The NSIT Site Licensing Office maintains a license for the NVivo analytic package. This license covers NVivo 7, which includes all features formerly found in NVivo 2, NVivo MERGE, and N6. Remember to include the name and email address of a contact person with your payment details -- download information will be sent to that address.

Origin Pro 7.5

The NSIT Site Licensing Office maintains a license for Origin Pro 7.5. The license is restricted to authorized hosts on the University network. Accordingly, you must include the hostnames of the machines you want authorized when making your payment.

SAS

The NSIT Site Licensing Office maintains an academic license for SAS, including the following modules:

Please note, this is based on what is included with SAS 9.1.3; specifics may change between versions and between platforms. Remember to include the name and email address of a contact person with your order; that is the address that license information will be sent to.

SPLUS

The NSIT Site Licensing Office is currently maintaining a license for SPLUS. Base SPLUS is covered by default; licenses for the SpatialStats, Wavelets, EnviornmentalStats, and FinMetrics modules are available upon request for no extra charge. Note that the Solaris and Linux licenses are tied to the Ethernet card of the hosting machine; accordingly, you should remember to include the MAC address of the host machine along with your order.

ArcGIS (ArcView, ArcInfo

Social Sciences Divisional Computing is maintaining a license for the ARC GIS software packages, including ArcView and ArcInfo. For information on joining this license, contact Todd Schuble at tschuble@uchicago.edu.

Paying for software

Except where noted above, payment for site licensed software can be made via Buysite, using NSIT Site Licensing as a non-catalog vendor. You can also search for "Site Licensing" in the BuySite hosted catalogs.

Please remember to include the name and email address of a contact person in the "Note to Supplier" in Buysite; all correspondence regarding the license will go to that contact. Depending on the specific license, other information (such as operating system, hostname, or MAC address) may also be necessary; the description for the specific item above will include more information.
