Site Licensed Software for Students
The Site Licensing Office maintains a number of software licenses which are available to students under various terms. These include:
- McAfee Antivirus (free download)
- Microsoft Office Professional, Microsoft Windows Upgrade, Microsoft Visual Studio
- Mathematica (free download)
- SPLUS
- SPSS
- SAS
- NVivo
Please note that we do NOT have a license for Stata which covers student-owned machines. Students will need to purchase these licenses directly from Stata.
In addition to the site licensed software listed here, two other venues on campus provide students access to software, either for purchase or by using a University-owned machine:
- Machines at the USITE Computing Clusters have a wide variety of high-end applications installed on them, including ArcGIS, MATLAB, SPSS, and various multimedia tools. These machines are available for use by all students.
- Students can purchase retail versions of many software packages at steep educational discounts through the NSIT Solution Center. This is probably the best route for students to get Adobe products, such as Photoshop and CS3.
McAfee Antivirus
In order to help control security threats to the University network, NSIT subsidizes a license for McAfee antivirus software. It can be downloaded at no charge from http://antivirus.uchicago.edu/.
Microsoft Products
The University subsidizes a central license for the most commonly-used Microsoft desktop applications, including Office, Windows Upgrade, and Visual Studio. Students can obtain these through the NSIT Solution Center for a media fee. For more information, see the Microsoft Campus Agreement page.
Mathematica
NSIT is currently subsidizing a central site license for the Mathematica modelling package. Students can download this software at no charge from http://mathematica.uchicago.edu/.
SPLUS
A student version of SPLUS as an add-on to our site license. This is a fully-functional version of SPLUS, though none of the additional modules are available to students. The cost is $25 per machine, with a renewal due each year in the June/July timeframe regardless of when you initially enroll in the program. See below for purchase details.
SPSS
A limited number of students are covered under our SPSS campus license. This is a fully-functional version of SPSS for Windows, including the Base, Advanced, and Regression Models modules. The cost is $70 per machine, with a renewal due each year in the June/July timeframe regardless of when you initially enroll in the program. See below for purchase details.
SPSS for Macintosh is NOT covered under our site license.
SAS
Students may obtain a full version of SAS 9 for Windows under our campus license. The cost is $200 per machine, with a renewal due each year in the June/July timeframe regardless of when you initially enroll in the program. See below for purchase details.
NVivo
Students may obtain a full version of NVivo for Windows under our campus license. The cost is $140 per machine, with a renewal due each year in the September timeframe regardless of when you initially enroll in the program. Graduate students in the School of Social Service Administration should contact SSA IT about obtaining this software; others should see below for purchase details.
Paying for software
Except where noted above, payment for site licensed software can be made via Buysite, using NSIT Site Licensing as a non-catalog vendor. Unfortunately, this is the onlymethod by which the Site Licensing Office can accept payment at present time; we cannot accept cash, checks, or credit cards. This means that students who wish to participate in for-pay licenses must ask their departments to act as go-betweens: The student pays the department, and the department issues payment to Site Licensing in the student's name. Please make sure to ask your department to include your name and email address as a "Note to Supplier" when purchasing the software.
Once the Site Licensing Office has received payment, you can arrange with us to obtain access to software installers and license information for the software you've paid for.
